Coach

I first became involved with the Club as a parent when my daughter, Erin, joined a few years ago; now my youngest, Fraser swims on a regular basis too.

My decision to send Erin for a trial at Portland was based on the positive feedback I had received about the Club, its inclusive approach and friendly family atmosphere and I am pleased to say the Club continues to strive for this today.

I have always been keen for both of my children to become strong swimmers. I believe it's an important life skill. I am also passionate about sport and exercise for its physical, mental and social benefits and want to encourage my kids to participate in a range of sports and for sport and exercise to be an integral part of their lives.

My connection with swimming came later in life, as I wanted to diversify my own training (I got a bit bored of running) and joined a triathlon club. I enjoyed swimming as a kid and have really enjoyed getting back into the water and improving my own skills and technique. As I have learned, by concentrating on technique and enjoying being in the pool, improved fitness and performance can follow.

My children have got a lot out of being part of the Club and I wanted to give something back, so late 2012 I offered to look after the Club kit shop and I also joined the committee. January 2014, after volunteering as a coach helper for a few months, I completed my ASA Level 1 course and continue to support the coaching team.

I am really enjoying watching and helping the swimmers at Portland develop and improve, particularly the younger swimmers who have joined us from swim schools.
