Lammas LC

Half – term this year for swimmers at Portland Swimming Club was kicked off in Sutton in Ashfield – at the Sports League Gala at the Lammas Leisure Centre.

Things for the organising team didn’t go smoothly … the overhead Tannoy failed ,then the loudspeaker gave up the ghost so they resorted to whistles and an ample pair of lungs to get each race off to a flying start ….. Fortunately the Portland team had a much better start with Mikey Pawluk leading the way with a 1st place and a new PB in the opening event – the boys 15/u 100m Individual Medley.
For 1st places it was the boys’ night – Raj Malhi and Mikey (again) putting in spirited performances and leading the field home in the 11/u 50m Breaststroke and 15/u 50m Butterfly.

Not to be outdone the girls put in equally strong swims with 2nd places for Beatrice Munro in the 13/u 100m Backstroke, Gaby Marriott in the 13/u 50m Butterfly, achieved in a new PB time. Angelina Giannino completed a double, securing 2nd in the 11/u 50 Breaststroke and 11/u 50m Butterfly, despite losing her goggles, and Emma Horne pulled hard all the way against a strong competitive field to come in a close 2nd in 100m Open Breaststroke.

The Relays heralded a united team performance from the girls too – with 2nd places for both 11/13 and 15/over Medley teams. Beatrice and Emma kicked hard for home on the last leg to conclude a strong team performance all round.

It was 2nd all the way for the Relays as the boys too put in accomplished and determined performances. They were lead home by fabulously smooth and strong final legs in the case of both team captain Connor Cruickshank and Gabriel DiFolco-Brooks to the most enthusiastic & deafening poolside support and achieved close 3rd places.

There was real breadth and depth in the competition which brought the best out in a lot of our swimmers who achieved some fabulous PB’s.
Dylan Hughes and Edward Roberts took over 3 seconds off their times in the 11/u 50m Butterfly and 15/u 100m Breaststroke.

It was a busy night for Ned Johnson. Austin fell ill on the day and Ned stepped up to swim in his races swimming more events than anyone else on the night and got a 2nd place finish in the 13/u 100m Breaststroke. He also shaved over a second off his time, while Olivia Wright achieved the same in the Girls Open 100m Backstroke.

Strong swims from Gaby, Bethan Simmons and Raj also saw them all improve their PB’s. Good swims too from Emma Watson, Kathy Pawluk and Ava Tucker, as well as coach Matt Price who joined in the Cannon as 10th Boy to allow us to race for points and set a fine example to the cheering team.

A special mention goes to the U/9 relay team: Liam Hastings, Grace Artley, Judd Tucker and Kate Watson. Thanks to Liam’s family changing their plans so that he could swim, we were able to enter a 9/u team, giving other young swimmers a chance to swim and enabling Portland to compete for points in this age category for the first time in a long while. They were full of beans (and sweets!) poolside and swam very well – achieving a commendable 2nd place in every single one of their relays, including the 20 swimmer strong Cannon for a magnificent finale.

Portland finished 4th overall, with our highest points total this season: 171 (Twice as many points as the team finishing 5th and only 29 points off first place!)

All performances were a credit both to the individuals swimming and to the club. Poolside support was as enthusiastic and encouraging as ever and morale buoyant. It was a pleasure to watch such strong, committed performances across the board … Well Done Portland!
