Dan Higgon

We are really pleased to announce that Nottingham Portland Swimming Club has a new Head Coach. His name is Dan Higgon and he will

join us after the summer break on Wednesday 28th August.

His first Head Coach position was at Leeds Metropolitan University, where he completed his BSc degree in Sports Performance Coaching. He then went on to become Head Coach at Cleethorpes & District SC, Chesterfield SC and, most recently, Head Performance Swim Coach at the University of Leeds.

He has helped out at a couple of training sessions already, so some of the swimmers have met him and have given their approval! Parents were also very impressed.

We are really looking forward to welcoming Dan to our Club. He has some great plans for the future to share with us all, so, everyone, have a lovely holiday and come back refreshed for an exciting new swimming season!

Ponds ForgeJack Harmer, who started swimming with Portland at the age of 9 and is now a Nova Centurion B1 Squad swimmer, competed at this year's National Championships – the ASA's annual competition aimed at the country's elite swimmers.

Jack did more than just reach the Nationals - an amazing feat in itself – he had some fantastic 14 years Age Group swims in the 50m pool at Pond's Forge, Sheffield.

  • He came 15th in 100m backstroke.
  • He got a 2 second PB in the 200m backstroke to qualify 5th fastest for the Final, in which he finished 9th.
  • He swam a PB in the last leg of the 100m freestyle relay Final to pull the Nova team from 4th to 3rd place for a bronze medal.

Absolutely fantastic! A remarkable achievement - congratulations Jack!

MarlinAs many of you are aware we always have a break from swimming over the summer to accommodate the Coaches holidays and give the children (and parents!) a well-earned rest.

This year the last session will be Friday 2nd August and we will return to training w/c 26th August, but rather than usual the six week break on a Sunday night at the University Pool, we will be running them as usual, breaking from those along with the sessions at Portland Leisure Centre.

Please note, Monday 26th August is a Bank Holiday so the Leisure Centre will be closed.

A quick response to an opportunist email asking if any coaching positions were available at several Nottinghamshire Swimming Clubs secured the services of a first year university student by the name of Grant Robe. Little did we know what the next three and a half years was in store for Nottingham Portland Swimming Club or for Grant himself!
