swimming-with-contact-lenses-21Portland swimming club is a members swimming club with volunteers running the coaching, judging, timekeeping and administration roles. Funds are only generated from sponsorship, fundraising and the members' monthly/annual fees, with a small contribution from the Masters swimming lanes.

This year we are committed to raising funds to be able to add an extra 1 hour training session, ideally on Monday nights. This will benefit all the swimmers, whichever squad they are training with, as any extra pool time will be allocated evenly across the squads. It will cost the club approximately £2500 to fund an additional hour including the lifeguarding charges.

People probably don't realise the amount of training that our children do in the pool per week, therefore we would like to take the opportunity to get our swimmers involved in fun fundraising which is linked to their training regime. It will give the swimmers a chance to explain to family and friends how swimming benefits them, keeps them fit and will also allow them to talk about their swimming achievement and future goals.

stopwatchWe are running time trials at four Sunday night sessions over the next three months. These are to allow swimmers to try to achieve required times for events such as County Championships or just broaden the range of events they have a go at and get Personal Best Times for (we may have budding 400m front crawl specialists that we don’t know about!)
So we can get organised for these in advance please can you complete this form and register for the events they wish to do.
Note, not all are compulsory but that is indicated on the form.

  • 14th October 400m IM (optional) and 200m Breaststroke.
  • 11th November 100m Breast, 100m Fly (optional) and 200m Freestyle.
  • 9th December 400m Freestyle (optional) and 200m Backstroke.
  • 16th December 200m IM, 100m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke.

The completed forms need to be returned to Andy Mulligan (he is at all training sessions) by Wednesday 10th October.

50m swimming pool at Loughborough University

We are organising a training a session in the 50m pool at Loughborough University on Sunday 7th October.

Our original idea was to give members likely to swim at the Snow Frills Gala (1st / 2ndDecember at Sheffield) the opportunity to see/train in a long course pool before competing.  However, we have had quite a few interested members already, so we have decided to open it up to those that aren't regular Open Meet swimmers but may wish to have a go in a long course pool - even if they are not doing Snow Frills.

The date is Sunday 7th October 3 – 4pm and it costs £4 per member.  Our Head Coach, Grant, will be running the session.

If you would like to go, could you please email Andy Mulligan on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we would also ask that you could pay him as soon as possible.

Depending upon demand, we may run a similar session in November.

For members wanting to take part in Open Meets, we have identified some up-coming galas that would be ideal for Portland SC swimmers to take part in before the Christmas break. (Remember swimmers need to be 9 or over)

We have just received information for three of them and for one of them (Major Oak) we don’t have much time to get the entries in.

These are:

November 11th – Long Eaton Distance Open Meet.

  • Entries in by Friday 19th October

November 11th - Falcon Sprint Meet

  • Entries in by Friday 28th September

November 17th and 18th; - Major Oak Open Meet

  • Entries in by Friday 21st September (THIS FRIDAY)

About the Meets

Long Eaton

This is a long distance event with the shortest distance being 400m Front crawl and 400m Individual Medley (4 lengths of each stroke). This is aimed at a small number of swimmers looking to get County times in these events.

Click HERE to go to the website with entry fees, qualifying times, warm up times, order of events etc.

Falcon Sprint Meet

This is very much open to everyone as it is sprint gala with no qualifying times so is a perfect first Open Meet for swimmers new to Open Meets. The events are over 50m (2 lengths) in any of the four strokes and a 100m Individual Medley (IM – 1 length of each stroke). Swimmers can do as many of the five events as they like!

Entry fees, start times, order of races etc can be found HERE.

Major Oak Open Meet

This is a Level 3 Open Meet where there are qualifying times that swimmers have to be able to achieve to enter that event. There is a real mixture of events over the two days across all strokes and 50m, 100m and 200m distances and is a good event for those trying for County times in specific events.

Please follow THIS LINK to the website with entry fees, qualifying times, warm up times, order of events etc.

If you have any questions or queries about events your child should do then please speak to or email Grant: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

gift boxRaffle Prize Donations

This year we are going to do something different and have four colour coded baskets as raffle prizes.  Each lane will be allocated a colour and we would ask that you donate something of that colour to be made up into the final basket. This can be food, gifts, stationary, clothing, games (the limit is your imagination!) raffle donations can come in from now and if you can leave them with the person doing the register or hand them directly to me that would be great.

Lanes 1 & 8 Red

Lanes 2 & 7 White

Lanes 3 & 5 Blue

Lanes 4 & 6 Purple

Many Thanks and we look forward to what I am sure will be a great event.

Thanks Jo
