ChesterfieldOn the hottest day of the year so far ... that sounds familiar ... Portland families travelled to Chesterfield to the (for once appropriately named) Summer Splash Open Meet. The flume-lined pool and giant poolside conservatory lent the venue an exotic look to complement the tropical climate for this end of 2012/2013 season competition.

The top 3 heat declared winners in each event and age group would receive medals. Anyone swimming faster than the upper cut-off time would be presented with a Speeding Certificate.

Alfreton LCOn the hottest day of the year so far, a small Portland contingent entered Alfreton Leisure Centre, weighed down with water bottles to abate the threatened heat exhaustion.
By the end of the warm-up, swimmers were refreshed and parents had bagged poolside seats, for once looking forward to splash attacks by Lane 1 swimmers.

100m IM and 50m sprints in every stroke for all the 14 years and under swimmers promised a fast-paced, eventful occasion. Trophies would be given to the top six boys and girls in each age group – 100m Individual Medley by heat times, 50m events by place in Finals, swum by the top six qualifiers.

16 swimmers would be representing Portland, including Luke and Guy Farnsworth who re-joined the team in purple for the day, having signed up to this Junior Open Meet whilst still members.

Realising they were just working their way down a very long line of spectators, the envisaged stampede once they opened the doors to the pool dashed our hopes of getting good seats.

Travelling to the far north of the county for the Worksop Dolphins Open Meet, aware that all six lanes of the pool could be seen from the front row seats only, we rushed to get the swimmers to the warm-up and parents to the spectator gallery. Early bird parents saved the day and reserved seats, giving a prime view of the swimming to come.

swimmer1Portland made a splash in Hucknall on Saturday 23 February – a vivid splash of colour. Eyes were drawn to a streak of purple in Lane 2 as our swimmers warmed up for the re-scheduled snow-hit sports centre gala, originally planned for January.

If the Club's new purple hat wasn't attention-grabbing enough, Jack Harmer made sure Portland was well and truly noticed with a commanding PB-time win in the first race of the night, the 15 & under 100m Individual Medley.

A gala report from one of our swimmers.

This was the first round of Sports Centre League for 2013 with Portland hosting in the sweltering heat of Bramcote Leisure Centre and getting through the mass crowds at reception was only the beginning. On poolside we had banners flying, swimmers warmed up (completely unnecessarily in the Bramcote hothouse) and plenty of lukewarm water to go round, we were all geared up for the upcoming events.
