JC Dobb Spring League at Lammas Leisure Centre, 18 January, the first gala of 2014 – This was a night of adversity and the first round of congratulations must go to our Team Managers, Diane and Isabel, for coping magnanimously with A LOT of last minute changes! On a night when many swimmers were asked unexpectedly to swim out of age groups or their least favourite strokes, the Portland team pulled together as always and gave it their best.
So well done Ruby, Angelina D, Maddie, Luke, Gabriel, Raj, Oscar, Lucy, Will, Grace, Connor, Kathy, Andrew, Rebecca, Fraser, Angelina G, Erin, Gen, Ethan, Louis, Michael and Tim!
At the end of the evening we were in 6th place BUT with 10 PBs under our belts and 3 new times posted: PBs for Grace (50m breaststroke); Maddie (25m backstroke & 25m fly); Luke (25m freestyle); Connor (50m freestyle & 50m backstroke); Angelina D (50m backstroke); Raj (25m breaststroke); Gabriel (25m fly); Louis (50m free) and new times for Ruby (25m breaststroke); Maddie (25m freestyle); Gabriel (25m backstroke).
Special mentions:
Erin – for being ‘supporter of the evening’, cheering on her team mates all night and for being 14!
Angelina D – for swimming in the Open Relay at the grand old age of 12 …!!!
Maddie – for overcoming her nerves to swim a super 25m freestyle, posting a new time to add to her 2 PBs.
Lucy – for swimming nearly every race!
Ruby, Oscar, Angelina G and Fraser – for being the most enthusiastic relay team … ever!
Swim(s) of the night though to Louis who not only had to swim as a 10, 12 and 14 year old but also swam an amazingly brave 50m fly even though, in the words of sister Ruby, ‘he doesn’t like fly’! We are all very proud of you Louis.
Huge thanks to Tim for being the coach on the night and swimming a great relay leg with a very close finish.
Thanks also, of course, to the ‘gamesmakers’ for a truly sterling effort on the night.
