Trophies were arranged and covered, families and food arrived, extra chairs were shipped in; we were left with standing room only. Edwalton Golf Club was jam-packed, drinks were ordered, it was time for the eagerly awaited Presentation to begin …
One by one, swimmers who had attended this year’s Club Championships were called up by Chairman David Britton to collect certificates and trophies from coach Ben Willetts, himself an award winner – ASA regional Young Volunteer of the Year. Volunteers are wonderful …. Volunteers of all ages are welcome all year round – they are the lifeblood of our Club! Ahem …
The news that Connor had been chosen as our new Club Captain and Emma and Michael would be Team Captains was, to put it mildly, warmly welcomed. These are your representatives, swimmers! We know they will be excellent ambassadors for the Club and great role models to us all.
Smiley photos and lots of cheering and clapping later, `BUFFET IS OPEN!’ was announced and the room emptied. Upon the masses’ return with wobbly paper plates laden with goodies (“Are there any savouries at all on your plate?!”), an invitation went out to `match the obscure fact to the coach’ as a fun quiz and the opportunity arose for people to part with some cash for the raffle. When the crumbs had settled, the answers to the quiz were read out by the new Captains …. Well, I never! What interesting lives our coaches have lead!
So, with secrets revealed, chocolates shared out, the lively, noisy bit of the night began – the PARTY! Every inch of the dance floor became obscured by dancers, Conga gaps aside, and a good time was had by all. What a groover DJ Nigel is!
Many thanks to Rebecca Day for co-ordinating the event and to everyone else who helped make it such a special evening.
We’ve booked next year’s – it’ll be on Friday 27th November. Write it in your diary NOW!
