hucknall lcThe final gala before the summer holidays was held on the 11th July at Hucknall Leisure Centre.

The gala was hosted by Portland Swimming Club and, as always, the centre received a good turnout with the viewing gallery full of parents cheering children on to do their very best.

The first mention of this report goes to Portland’s new gala recruits, Archie, Efan & Matthew. All three swam really well and not only helped to represent Portland in relays but also on an individual level. We hope you have now ‘caught the gala bug’ and we look forward to welcoming you at your next gala in the not too distance future!

Second mention goes to all swimmers representing the Portland team, it is great to see such comradeship and working together towards the same goal. Girls and boys captains, Connor and Emma, were excellent role models throughout the night and were often seen supporting the younger members when they were unsure or needed a little guidance.

All swimmers swam hard in both the relays and individuals, so much so the ‘sisters’ representing the open relay (Hannah and Madeleine Mackay and Emma and Rebecca Horne) obtained a speeding ticket for their efforts! On an individual level 12 PBs and 2 New Times were recorded, highlighting both commitment and individual personal development … amazing!

PBs & New Times were obtained by;

  • 10 & underBen for 25m Backstroke / Mai for 25m Breaststroke & New Time for 25m Free
  • 12 & underBriony for 50m Breaststroke (by 4.5 seconds!) & 50m Fly (5s!) / Isabella for 50m Backstroke 4s!) / Phoebe for 50m Free (4s!) / Luke for 50m Free / Archie set a New Time for 50m Breaststroke
  • 14 & underSamuel for 50m Fly / William for 50m Free / Stan for 50m Backstroke
  • OpenTarun for 50m Free (3s!) / Connor for 50m Fly

Third and final mention goes to all the Portland helpers and supporters. A special thank you to Tim who was the poolside coach for the evening, to the numerous team helpers who worked together to host the event, to the assistants on poolside who organise & reassure the swimmers and finally to all parents who bring a smile to our swimmers’ faces when they have done something incredible – swum with such pride & confidence. Well Done All xx
