On 19th November, 10 of our ‘older’ swimmers (13-16 year olds) participated in an Aquatic Helpers workshop delivered by Laura Campbell from the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), as part of a course designed to train young swimmers to assist our coaches around poolside.
As soon as she walked into the training room, Laura (pictured with our swimmers) commented on how excited the group was and, by all accounts, they kept up the enthusiasm all evening – taking part in some entertaining activities as well as tackling more serious coaching matters.
The workshop covered aspects of safety, communication and teaching/coaching skills, as well as safeguarding issues. The initial 3 hours of theory will now be followed up with 3 hours of practical training around the pool, when the participants will have to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they learned during the workshop and complete a workbook before finally qualifying. So look out for them at training sessions over the next few weeks.
Well done to the swimmers who took part for being a real credit to the Club.
