Jamie Rigby Memorial Gala

Jamie RigbyThe joyous one minute giant splash by the swimmers at the start of the evening set the tone for this gala, in memory of Jamie Rigby who was a swimmer at Ilkeston Swimming Club when he died in a car crash at the age of 18 in 2006.

Thank you to all of you who were there for creating such a great atmosphere and for swimming your socks off!

With a total of 61 races and over half the individual races resulting in PBs, it was a busy, fruitful and enjoyable night!

Youth Counties 2014 Youth Counties2014 programmes

There was some seriously good swimming over the weekend of 15th & 16th March at the County Championships held at Beechdale for our 15 years and older swimmers!

With season’s bests and PBs for Rebecca Phillips, Molly, Emma and Connor, they can wear their 2014 County tops with pride. The bar has been set high for younger swimmers competing in March’s Age Group Counties.

Well done to Emma for reaching 2 finals and to Connor for swimming 50m freestyle in under 30 seconds!

JC Dobb 1st January 2014

Lammas LCJC Dobb Spring League at Lammas Leisure Centre, 18 January, the first gala of 2014, was a night of adversity with lots of last-minute changes, when many swimmers were asked unexpectedly to swim out of age groups or their least favourite strokes. However, the Portland team pulled together as always and gave it their best.

Well done to everyone!

JC Dobb 30th November 2013

underwater-entryWell done to all our swimmers, in this last leg of the JC Dobb Autumn Series at Hucknall Leisure Centre, for great racing and some very brave swims in events outside their comfort zone and to those of you who swam up into older age groups – some of our relay teams only had one swimmer who was of the age! You did yourselves and your Club proud on what turned out to be a very challenging evening.

Keep up the good work in 2014!

Sports Centre League 23rd November 2013

hucknall lc16 PBs & some fantastic swims at the Hucknall pool!

We finished 4th on the night and 3rd overall which is a very fine result indeed – remember some of the opposition are clubs 4 times the size of ours. Well done to all the swimmers who helped over the series – you should all be extremely proud of yourselves.

Peter Pink Trophy Gala 9th November 2013

Peter Pink Trophy

What do you call a collection of 55 swimmers? A ‘Peter Pink of swimmers’ of course! For the first time certainly in recent history we had 2 teams representing our Club, Team Dom and Team Dan, who between them clocked up 31 PBs, 5 new times, 3 new county qualifying times (CT) and 8 speeding tickets!

However, this night was not about trophy success but about the success of our swimmers who are going from strength to strength and are great ambassadors for our Club. Well done and thank you guys!

  • Grace Rigby PB’d in the IM and came 3rd in grade age group for 50m Free.
  • Erin Birney was 4th in grade age group for Breaststroke, 5th Back, 6th Free and PB’d in the IM.
  • Stanley Toplass PB’d 3 times (Free, Fly & IM), earned a Speeding Ticket in the Fly (slicing 4 seconds off his previous best), but it got him to the final.
  • Emma Horne reached 3 finals and got 2 PBs (Back & Free).
  • Olivia Misiuda PB’d in Breaststroke and qualified for 2 finals.
  • Edward Roberts reached 3 finals, going quicker than the heats in all of them, setting 2 successive PBs in both Free and Back!

  • Lucy Toplass got 2 PBs (Back & IM) and came 1st in grade age group for Breast.
  • Mia Cunnison PB’d in both her races (Back & IM), knocking almost 8 seconds off her time in the IM.
  • Rebecca Horne did 9 swims, i.e. reached every final, set PBs in every stroke, 3 of them in finals.

Special congratulations to:

  • Connor, who has been trying so long and finally succeeded in breaking the 31 second barrier for 50m Freestyle. Also, 9 swims (i.e. all finals), 5 PBs! Whoa!
  • Isabelle Day, who PB’d in all 4 of her heats, then again in the 2 finals she swam (Back & Free), achieving a 50m free County Time; only hundredths off a County Time in Back and Breast too.
  • Beatrice Munro for a 4 second PB in 50m Free and collecting cash at her very first Open Meet (for 2 second place finals)!
  • Ben Brown for 3 swims, 3 PBs – over 3 seconds in the Free meant a Speeding Ticket, but a County Time; a place in the Breaststroke final and a second County Time – only 3 weeks after his 9th birthday!

A swimmer’s work is never done!

Homework has to be squeezed in between swims.

An absolutely huge THANK-YOU to Dom, who looked after all the swimmers, giving them advice and support throughout the long day.

WELL DONE to our amazing swimmers – you make us all very proud.

Sports Centre League 19th October 2013

Strictly Swimming

The half term destination for the gala team was Sutton-in-Ashfield on Saturday night 19th October and a great time was had by all. Arriving in the pouring rain certainly didn’t dampen team spirits.

The evening had more sparkle than Strictly; we were definitely top of the leader board for team spirit and only minor goggle disaaaaster darling for Gaby and Stanley. There were four PBs, four new times set and one county time. Well done team Portland for your effervescing effort in this challenging league. Fab-u-lous.
